Rosie and I sneaked into Nicole’s apartment building through the back fire escape and made our way up to her apartment. Outside the front door, I handed over my lock picking kit to Rosie. She examined it carefully then pulled out two long, thin pieces of steel and got to work on our entry.

She was slow but methodical.

A lot slower than I would have been, anyway.

But of course, it was her first time. And I didn’t like to admit it, but it was probably more than five minutes quicker than my first attempt at picking a lock.

I was leaning back against the wall when the door finally clicked open. Rosie grinned up at me, eyes alight with pride at successfully getting it open. Silently, Rosie held the door open an inch, took out the picks, put them away, and handed the kit back over to me.

Rosie pushed the door open further and stepped inside, me right behind.

We both froze at the same moment.

Wood sliding on wood, followed by a thump, sounded from inside Nicole’s bedroom as a dresser drawer was thumped closed.

Someone else was in the apartment.

I pulled out my gun.

Silently, we sneaked inside, pulling the door gently closed behind us.

Who could it be? There was only one way to find out.

I asked Rosie whether she was ready to do this with a look.

A clenched jaw and a firm nod told me she was.

We carried on inside.

Action time.
